About the suction head of water pumps
In industrial production and daily life, various applications such as water circulation, transfer, dosing, spraying, irrigation, showering, lifting, cleaning, etc. require the use of micro water pumps, micro liquid pumps, small water pumps, micro suction pumps, micro suction machines, and other types of micro pumps. One important parameter of micro pumps such as micro water pumps, micro liquid pumps, and small water pumps is "suction head".
"Suction head", also known as "maximum self-priming height", can be understood as "the degree of self-priming". It refers to the maximum vertical distance between the suction port of the micro pump and the surface of the liquid to be pumped that the micro pump can automatically lift without the need for additional water intake.
When the water source is lower than or at the same level as the position of the pump, the pump needs to have self-priming ability. For example, when camping outdoors and need to pump water from a river, it is best to use a micro water pump with self-priming ability (it is not possible to add water to the inlet pipe first). Or in situations where the liquid being pumped is corrosive or inconvenient to add water.
For example, the BSP series has a relatively small volume, but the suction head can reach 4 meters, which is quite high in the category of micro water pumps without additional water intake. Another example is the CSP series, which can achieve a suction head of up to 2 meters.
Not all pumps in the category of micro water pumps have self-priming ability or "suction head". Some centrifugal water pumps do not have self-priming ability and must be primed with water before the first use. Although some micro water pumps also have self-priming ability, the indicated "suction head" may differ from the actual vertical height that can be pumped when the inlet pipe is filled with air, and may be less than half. Therefore, when selecting a water pump, the suction head is an important parameter to consider.
