What factors should be considered when choosing the sealing form of a vertical long-shaft pump?
When choosing a vertical long shaft pump, in addition to considering the material, flushing scheme and motor configuration, there is another important factor to take into account, which is the sealing form of the shaft seal. In this article, Changsha Zoomlian Pump Industry, a manufacturer of vertical long shaft pumps, will introduce to you the factors to consider when choosing the shaft seal form of a vertical long shaft pump. We believe this will help you select a more suitable vertical long shaft pump device.
Main Factors to Consider When Selecting Shaft Seals for Vertical Long Shaft Pumps
1、Chemical properties of the medium: If the medium is highly corrosive, sealing materials with excellent corrosion resistance, such as PTFE or Hastelloy, should be selected. For corrosive media, avoid using metal materials that are prone to corrosion.
2、Particle content of the medium: If the medium contains a large amount of solid particles, it will cause abrasive wear on the sealing surface and shorten the service life of the sealing assembly. In such cases, sealing materials with wear-resistant properties should be selected, or non-contact sealing technologies, such as magnetic drive pumps, should be considered.
3、Medium viscosity: For media with high viscosity, the sealing friction surfaces require good lubrication conditions to prevent seal failure due to overheating.
4、 Temperature and pressure of the medium: Under high-temperature conditions, the physical properties of sealing materials will decline, such as elasticity, strength and wear resistance. Therefore, for high-temperature media, sealing materials need to have good thermal stability, and an auxiliary cooling system may be required to keep the temperature of the sealing surface within a safe range. Under high pressure, the seal must have sufficient strength and rigidity to withstand the impact of medium pressure on the sealing surface and prevent medium leakage.
5、Medium flow rate: A medium with a high flow rate increases the abrasion of the sealing surface and intensifies the heat generation at the sealing surface. Therefore, materials with good wear resistance should be used, and an effective cooling system should be considered to maintain the temperature of the sealing surface.
Types of Shaft Seals for Vertical Long Shaft Pumps
1、Common forms of pump shaft seals include packing seals, mechanical seals, and hard alloy seals, etc. Packing seals have a simple structure, but they have a large leakage rate and high power loss, and are suitable for transporting general media such as water; mechanical seals have a good sealing effect, a very small leakage rate, and a long service life, but they are expensive and are suitable for transporting petroleum and chemical media.
2、Special medium considerations: For high-viscosity media, spring-enclosed mechanical seals may not be suitable as they are prone to corrosion and clogging by impurities in the medium. For equipment handling highly corrosive, high-viscosity and easily crystallizing media, spring-external mechanical seals can be considered.
Taking all the above factors into account, when choosing the type of shaft seal for a vertical long-shaft pump, it is necessary to determine the most suitable shaft seal material and type based on the specific characteristics of the medium, such as chemical properties, particle content, viscosity, temperature, pressure and flow rate, to ensure the sealing performance and reliability of the pump.
