How to Select Multistage Centrifugal Pump

It is important to determine how the multistage pump is going to be used before you can select the appropriate pump models and motor type.
Definition & Applications

What is a horizontal multistage centrifugal pump?

A horizontal multistage centrifugal pump is also called ring section multistage pump which has two or more impellers. The pump can absorb water or press water in multiple stages, so that the water can be raised to a high position. High head can be reached by adding or reducing the numbers of impeller.

Why use a horizontal multistage centrifugal pump?

The water can be raised to a high position and the multistage pump can be applicable for many fields such as circulation water for power generation, water supply for boilers in power plants, high pressure water in industrial production, water supply for chemical processing, mine drainage and underground drainage, water booster and supply for cities, seawater construction and etc.

How to Select?

Step 1:
Determine technical specifications:

Required head and flow rate (capacity) – Multistage pump head is the total required pressure and the flow rate is how much water capacity you need to transfer. Those two figures determine whether the pump is suitable or not. (you can find the specific parameters in the brochure)

Step 2:
Determine the liquid medium

Medium property – This is very important information and is required to ensure that the multistage pump materials such as impellers, shaft, shaft seal are compatible with the fluid being pumped. In addition, it is important to determine if the fluid is a corrosive or flammable and combustible liquid.

Temperature of the fluid being pumped – Multistage pump has upper temperature limits. The maximum temperature depends upon the pump material and whether it is fitted with cooling device.

Step 3:
Select the correct motor type:

Electric motor or diesel motor – If there is no electric power then diesel engine can be needed. It is usually applicable in irrigation or firefighting.
Motor type – If the liquid is flammable or combustible, the explosion proof motor is required. Otherwise, the regular motor can be used.
